Fanningstown castle. Fanningstown castle can be found located within the fertile valley of the river Maigue in county Limerick within the republic of Ireland. The property is situated within the barony of “coshmagh” which translates to “Foot of the plain”, this being a reference to the river bank the castle is nestled within. The area in which the castle can be found falls within the territory of an ancient Celtic peoples known as the Ui Cairbre Aobhdha. Because of this, the first castle on the site is said to stretch back all the way to the 1200s, however, following the invasion of the Anglo-Normans, control over this land changed hands and the castle at Fanningstown has been expanded upon and modernised many times over the centuries that followed.
